기타 마일즈 주니가(Miles Zuniga), 베이스 토니 스캘조(Tony Scalzo), 드럼 조이 셔필드(Joey Shuffield)의 삼인방으로 짜여진 패스트볼은 '루츠 음악의 벨리' 텍사스에서 1994년에 마그네토(Magneto)란 이름으로 결성됐다. 그들의 탄탄한 음악 뿌리가 어디서 왔는지 알 수 있는 대목이다. 이후 클럽 활동을 하며 기본기를 다져가던 그들은 유명한 멕시코 밴드와 동명임을 알고 곧바로 마그네토USA로 개명하였다. 그러나 그 밴드명도 오래가지 못하고 데뷔 앨범 제작을 위해 할리우드 레코드 사와 계약 체결 당시 음반사 측의 요청으로 즉석에서 패스트볼로 그룹명을 바꿨다.

패스트볼이 발표한 1996년의 데뷔 앨범 MAKE YOUR MAMA PROUD는 블링크 182(Blink 182)의 프로듀서를 담당했던 제리 핀(Jerry Finn)이 가세하여 펑크와 뉴웨이브 사운드를 크로스 오버시킨 음악을 선사했으나 별 반응을 얻지 못했다. 언론에서도 '그들은 야구장에서 녹 아웃됐다', '그들의 첫 앨범은 스트라이크 아웃 당했다'는 등 밴드명과 빗대어 혹평을 했다. 그러나 데뷔작의 수록곡 Human torch, Back door 등은 그들의 음악에 '영양가'가 넘쳐있음을 확인시켜줬다. Are you ready for the fallout과 Altamont에서 보여지는 발군의 멜로디 감각 역시 그들이 녹녹치 않은 존재들임을 각인 시켰다.
