A suicide bomber is being blamed for yesterday¡¯s attack inside an army mess tent at a base near Mosul in northern Iraq. Twenty-two people, most of them US soldiers, were killed in that blast. Defense secretary Donald Rumsfeld, while not talking directly about the bombing, did tell reporters at the Pentagon that his visits with wounded soldiers and the families of those killed in Iraq is a sobering experience.
--- When I meet with the wounded, with their families, or with the families of those who have been lost, their grief is something I feel to my core.
US soldiers and civilians wounded in yesterday¡¯s attack are being treated at a military hospital in Germany. Hospital spokeswoman says there are 35 US troops in the group, seven civilians. Eight are in intensive care.

The coast guard has suspended its search for five fishermen missing off the coast of Nantucket, Massachusetts. The captain and four members of his crew have been missing since their scallop boat floundered and sank in frigid waters after being hit by a large wave on Monday. One crewmember was found shortly after the boat went down.

Snow is spreading its way east from New Mexico through Ohio. A powerful storm has forecasters predicting a foot or more in parts of Ohio and Indiana. Nelson Bailes with the Evansville Regional Airport says his crews are having a tough time.
--- This is the worst storm we¡¯ve had here in a long time. We don¡¯t normally get this much snow at one time here in Evansville. Now, farther north in Indiana we do, but since we¡¯re on the very southern tip here in Indiana, we normally don¡¯t get this much snow at one time. So we¡¯ve had a problem keeping up with the, with the snowplows and the snow blowers.
Rain and snow are possible tomorrow from the Gulf of Mexico up through New England.

Cleared for takeoff. Transportation secretary Norman Mineta says the FAA¡¯s top safety folks have found Santa¡¯s sleigh is fit to fly.
--- We know how important it is to good little girls and good little boys all around the world that Santa be able to fly, and fly safely on Christmas Eve.

The government says nursing homes are showing marked improvement in the care and safety of their residents. John Rother is with the AARP.
--- We¡¯re seeing very significant improvements in some homes across the country. So it¡¯s a positive trend. We still need to do a lot more, but at least we¡¯re on the right direction.
The department of health and human services says the use of physical restraints on nursing home patients has dropped by nearly a quarter in two years, and fewer residents report suffering from pain.

A Florida appeals court has upheld a half-million dollar award to a flight attendant who blamed secondhand smoke on airliners for her bronchitis and sinus disease. Today¡¯s decision could clear the way for damage trials and up to 3,000 similar claims. It is seen as a test case of an agreement reached in 1997 between the tobacco industry and non-smoking flight attendants to settle claims blaming their illnesses on when smoking was permitted on jetliners. The tobacco companies had argued each attendant had to prove health problems from the secondhand smoke.
