AP update. I¡¯m Ed Donahue.

Insurgent rockets rained down on American forces at lunchtime at a base in Mosul, killing soldiers sitting in a mess tent. The military says 19 soldiers in all were killed. Here¡¯s brigadier general Carter Hamm, commander of Taskforce Olympia.
--- It¡¯s a sad day in Mosul, but as they always do, soldiers will come back from that, and they will do what they can do best to honor those who have fallen today, and as to see this very important mission through to a successful completion.
A somber President Bush says he¡¯s sending his heartfelt condolences to the families of those who died today in Mosul. But he says America is engaged in a vital mission for peace, and he is confident democracy will take hold in Iraq. The White House says it is clear some tough challenges remain when it comes to providing security in Iraq for Americans and for Iraqis voting at the end of next month.
--- We will also always remember those who have served and sacrificed, and on behalf of the Iraqi people, and on behalf of building a better and safer world.
That¡¯s press secretary Scott McClellan.

The jury at the Robert Blake murder trial in California¡¯s already heard from Blake himself before opening statements came to an end. Defense attorneys were allowed to show an excerpt from a Barbara Walters interview in which the actor insisted he would never have done anything to harm his baby daughter¡¯s mother.

Bobbi Jo Stinnett and the woman accused of strangling her and cutting the baby from her womb were photographed together at a dog show months before last week¡¯s attack. A photo gallery on Stinnett¡¯s own website includes pictures from the show last spring in Kansas. The suspect¡¯s husband, Kevin Montgomery, says he feels for the victim¡¯s family.
--- My heart ain¡¯t broke just from me and Lis and her kids. It¡¯s them too. That little precious baby.

General Mills wants to help you lose some of the weight you may put on this holiday season as it looks to help its sales. The maker of cereals as well as Betty Crocker, Pillsbury and Green Giant products has launched a free plan designed to help people lose 10 pounds in 10 weeks while eating General Mills products.

A big deal is closer to coming together in baseball¡¯s hot stove league. Marv Schneider has an update.
--- Five-time Cy Young award winner Randy Johnson is a step closer to being a Yankee. The three teams involved in that mega-deal have approved it, and it¡¯s been submitted to commissioner Bud Selig. At least eight players are involved. Johnson would go from the Diamondbacks to the Yankees. Arizona would get outfielder Sean Green from the Dodgers, plus three pitchers, and the Dodgers would get, among others, pitcher Javier Vazquez from the Yankees. The Yanks then would negotiate a contract extension with Johnson. Marv Schneider, New York.

celand says chess great Bobby Fischer can still live there if he wants to. Iceland has rejected a request from the US to withdraw the invitation. Fischer is wanted in the states on criminal charges of breaking international sanctions against Yugoslavia by playing chess there back in 1992. Fischer is held in great esteem in Iceland because he won the World Chess Championship in Reykjavik back in 1972.
