지금으로부터 42년 전, 이탈리아 칸초네(Canzone) 한 곡이 전세계를 뒤흔들었다. 이탈리아의 싱어송 라이터인 도메니코 모두뇨(Domenico Modugno)가 부른 ‘넬 브루 디핀토 디 브루( Nel Blu, Dipinto Di Blu : 푸르름 속에서 푸른색을 칠하라)’라는 곡으로, ‘푸른 하늘을 한가로이 날아다니는 꿈’을 노래한 곡이다. 이곡은 우리들에게는 ‘볼라레(Volare)’라는 제목으로 잘 알려져 있다.

가사 중에 즐겁게 후렴구로 흘러나오는 단어 ‘볼라레(Volare : 날아라)’가 너무 인상적이고, 좀처럼 기억 속에서 지워지지 않기 때문에 긴 제목보다는 짧은 이 단어가 제목으로 널리 알려지게 된 것이다. ‘날아라, 노래하자’라는 뜻인 ‘볼-라-레- 오오 칸-타-레- 오오호 (Volare- oh! oh! Cantare- oh! oh! oh!)’ 이 후렴구를 듣게 되면 기분이 좋아지고, 자신도 모르게 멜로디를 따라 부르게 되며 흥겨움을 감출 수 없다. 그래서 대한항공 기내에서도 자주 선곡되는 곡이다.

하늘을 나는 비행기 속에서 이곡을 듣고 있노라면 마치 푸른 하늘 위에 그림을 그리며 단독 비행을 하고 있는 느낌이 든다.

이 곡은 산레모 가요제(Festival Di Sanremo)에서 그랑프리를 수상했고, 칸초네 역사상 초유로 미국 팝 차트 정상에까지 오른, 미국에서도 가장 알려진 이탈리아 노래, 비영어권 노래가 됐다. 이곡이 발표됐던 1958년 그래미 시상식(Grammy Award)에서도 그 해의 최고 노래(Song of the Year), 최고 앨범(Album of the Year)으로 선정되기도 했다.
