Peter : No, it's great. My dog loves the water. Bath time is usually loads of fun.

/i:/와 /i/ 의 구별
|
|
영어에서 모음의 장단은 단어의 의미를 구분하는 데 필수적이다. 그 중에서도 /i:/와/i/는 특히 유사하게 발음하여 의사 소통에 어려움을 겪는 발음이다. 한번은 외국인 손님을 모시고 설악산에 갔을 때이다. 주변 경치가 너무 아름다워 'Do you want to live here?'라고 물었더니 그는 'No, I like this place. I do not want to leave now'하는 게 아닌가? 그는 live를 leave로 알아들은 것이다. 그 외국인의 입장에서 보면 2박 3일 일정으로 왔는데 첫날밤도 안자고 떠나자고 하니 오죽이나 황당했겠는가? 이처럼 모음의 장단이 말하고자하는 의도를 완전히 바꾸어 놓을 수도 있으니 매우 중요하다고 하겠다. /i/발음은 우리말의 /이/ 와 비슷한데 /i/는 우리말의 /이/보다 훨씬 짧게 그리고/i:/는 우리말의 이보다 훨씬 길게 발음하여야 한다. 따라서 leave는 '을리이잎'으로, live는 '을립' 또는 '을렙'처럼 발음하여야 한다.(영어에서의 /i/는 너무 짧아 우리말의 /이/ 보다도 오히려 /에/에 가깝게 발음한다)
