The US is trying to prod Israel and the Palestinians into getting back on the road to peace. Correspondent Mark Levee reports that a top US official is now in the region this weekend.

--- Condoleezza Rice is here as the personal envoy of President Bush. She’ll be pushing both sides, the Israelis and the Palestinians, to move toward implementing the roadmap peace plan. The first step is an end to nearly three years of violence, then it leads to a Palestinian state in three years.

And Palestinian foreign minister Nabil Shaath believes the US effort is on course.

주말 다들 잘 보내셨나요? 오늘 기사는 짤막짤막하네요. 요즘 간간이 라이베리아에서 반군 혹은 시민들의 폭동이 일어났다는 내용을 전해 들었는데 그 쪽 소식이네요. 코피 아난 유엔 사무총장이 라이베리아 사태 해결을 위해 평화유지군을 투입하자고 안보리에 요청했네요. 지난 주에 시민들이 수도로 몰려와 포위했으며((besiege, 둘러싸다, 포위하다)) ((siege, 포위, 공성)) ((seize; 붙잡다, 움켜쥐다)) 대통령의 퇴임을 요구하고 있습니다. 이 과정에서 500여명의 시민이 목숨을 잃었네요.
