It has been another deadly day in the Middle East, with a pair of attacks putting new pressure on the US-backed peace plan.

--- The two violent incidents came just half an hour apart. A suicide bomber blew himself up on a Jerusalem bus, and then Israeli helicopters fired at a car in Gaza City killing two senior Hamas militants.

Correspondent Mark Levee in Jerusalem. The bus bombing killed at least 16 people and prompted some strong words on the part of President Bush.

--- I strongly condemn the killings, and I urge and call upon all the free world, nations which love peace, to not only condemn the killings, but to use every ounce of their power to prevent them from happening in the future.

Yasser Arafat also condemned the attack. Hamas has claimed responsibility for it. Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon says his government will continue to pursue terrorists and terrorist groups, which suggests no letup in the strikes against targets in the West Bank and Gaza Strip.

팔레스타인인 한 명이 예루살렘 버스에서 자폭을 하는 바람에 16명이 사망을 하였습니다. 이에 보복하여 이스라엘에서도 로켓공격을 가하여 9명을 살상했습니다. 그 중에는 2명의 Hamas militants도 포함되어 있었습니다. 미국 부시대통령은 촉구하길 Hamas 같은 테러리스트들에게 자금 지원하는 것을 중단하자고 했습니다. peace plan이 1주일이 지나서 이미 무용지물이 되었습니다(in tatters). peace plan 이후 팔레스타인 24명, 이스라엘인 21명이 사망하였습니다. 이번 자살폭탄테러 지역은 예루살렘에서도 경비가 삼엄한 곳으로, 이스라엘이 쉽게 공격 받을 수 있다는 점이 노출되었고, 팔레스타인 총리 Abbas가 테러공격을 중지하라는 설득은 아무 효과가 없음을 보여주었습니다. 샤론 총리로서는 militants에 대한 공격을 중지하지 않을 것이라고 합니다. 폭파범은 18살 난 고등학생으로 밝혀졌습니다. ###came just half an hour apart### 30분 간격으로 발생되다. ###let up과 lepup### 의미는 비슷한데 letup은 명사라고 사전에 나오네요. 감속, 감속, 정지, 휴지,,,,, let up: 늦추다, 느즈러지다, 그치다, 그만두다, 눈감아주다.

한동안 어렵던 AP가 재키 비샤라의 차분한 보도로 자신감을 되찾아주는군요. 두 건의 사고가 연달아 일어난 중동은 어수선합니다. 예루살렘의 자살폭탄테러와 Gaza City의 이스라엘군 발포가 있었죠. 자살폭탄테러에 대해선 이리저리 비난하는 내용을 부연했는데, 이스라엘군의 발포에 대해서는 아무런 설명이 없네요. 주말 잘 보내시고 월요일날 뵙겠습니다. ◆ condemn : to criticize something or someone strongly, usually for moral reasons.

The Fed is out with its latest Beige Book survey of economic conditions around the country. Bottom line, the Fed says, things aren’t getting worse, and there are signs the economy may be rebounding at least in some parts of the country, places like Dallas, Kansas City, New York and Minneapolis.

전공이 경영학이었지만 참 재미없다는 생각을 하면서 공부했었는데, 영어를 본격적으로 공부하게 되면서 (특히 경제부문) 그때 배웠던 것들이 새록새록 생각나고 그래도 나한테 쓸모가 있구나 하는 생각이 듭니다. 뿌~듯. 현재의 경기상승조짐은 달러의 가치하락에서 오는 국제경쟁력과 이자율 하락에서 오는 소비촉진 때문이겠지요. 그리고 tax cut이란 거는 단기적으로 봤을 땐 경기상승의 효과가 있을진 몰라도 그만큼 적자가 더 늘어난다는 뜻인데, 그 법안이 만기된 후엔 그만큼 그 부담이 후세에게 다시 돌아간다는 의미겠죠. 재선을 위해선 Bush에게 단기적인 경기부양만이라도 꼭 필요한 것이겠지만.. 뭐 Bush 말로는 그때쯤 가면 탄탄해진 경기가 적자를 상쇄하고 남는다고 하는데.. 뚜껑은 열어봐야 알겠지요.

--- The 15 teenagers one by one, most of them with their parents, walked up before a judge, and assistant state attorneys said they wanted to amend the language. All are charged with battery. They wanted to amend the language to include or provoking bodily harm, just sort of clarifying state law.

The Associated Press survey of Iraqi civilians killed in the war shows a conservative estimate of about 3200 people with many survivors now recalling the pain and taking stock.

--- The young doctor reads the list of civilians killed during the war. The neatly rolled columns show the names and what they died from. The Associated Press, through looking at hospital records like these all across the country, has tallied that at least 3,240 civilians were killed during the war. The new director of Baghdad’s al-Kindi Hospital, Hamid Al-Baqri, says that many of those killed who were treated at his hospital died during the final days of the fighting. (Many people, during the entrance of the American troops to Baghdad are killed.) The AP’s tally is not comprehensive and the number of civilians killed, if ever fully discovered, is bound to be much higher. Lourdes Navarro, Baghdad

((a conservative estimate of~, 대략적인 추정치, 실제 수치보다 낮을 때 사용되며 관사가 붙는다는 점 유의하시길)) ((맥밀란사전, take stock; to spend some time thinking about the situation you are in before you decide what to do next, 우리말로 어찌 표현해야 할지 잘 모르겠네요. 다음 행동으로 넘어가기 전에 잠시 동안 지금의 상황에 대해서 생각하는 것?)) 네이버 사전에는 ((take stock))이 재고조사를 하다라는 의미로 나오네요. 이런 경우 참 난감하네요. 의미상 분명 맥밀란이 맞는 듯한데, 영영사전이 없는 사람은 저 문장을 어떻게 해석할까요? 고통을 떠올리며 재고조사를 한다? 다들 주의하시길…. 다시 확인하는 습관을 기르시길…기자로 넘어가기 전 나오는 알아들을 수 없는 말이 영어라고 생각하고…한참 고민했습니다. 내용을 확인해보니 사망자의 이름으로 추정됩니다. ((tally, 수를 세다, 계산하다, 기록을 조사하다)) 단어를 몰라서 문장을 끼워 맞추려니 여간 고생이 아니네요. 다른 내용은 스크립트를 확인하면 그리 어렵지 않은 것 같구요. ((entrance))를 ((influence))로 듣는 사태가 발생했습니다. 첨부터 ((conservative estimate))라고 했으니, 자세한 조사가 이뤄지면 사망자 수가 많이 늘어나는 게 당연하겠죠. Hope all is well.
