The Pentagon's top policy advisor says that stabilizing post-war Iraq has proven tougher and more complex than the Bush administration originally thought. Joseph Collins has told reporters that pre-war plans for restoring order in Iraq were comprehensive and carefully assembled. But he says once the plan became a reality, it had to be adjusted, sometimes quite a bit.

The Associated Press has conducted its first countrywide survey of civilians killed in Iraq. We get the story from Baghdad and correspondent Lourdes Navarro.
|
--- The investigation shows that at least 3,240 civilians were killed during the war in Iraq, many appear to have been the victims of American bombs and gunfire. However, as many witnesses describe, Iraqi soldiers often wore no uniform, making separating civilian and military casualties difficult. Witnesses also say some deaths were caused by the Iraqis themselves. The AP survey is based on the records of only 60 of Iraq¡¯s 124 hospitals, indicating that the number of civilian casualties is almost certainly higher than the first Gulf War. According to Iraqi authorities, an estimated 2,278 civilians were killed in the fighting. Lourdes Navarro, Baghdad.

A firefight in Afghanistan has left four attackers dead, but the Americans who were involved are all said to be OK. Officials say that Afghan rebels opened fire on a US patrol, causing the Americans to return fire. The predawn attack came as US and allied forces were patrolling for guerilla fighters in a volatile area near the Pakistan border.

A study has found that an expensive drug approved during the 1990s works no better than ordinary aspirin at preventing recurring strokes in Blacks. In fact, there were hints that aspirin might indeed do a better job.
